Simple Guide to Setting up a WordPress Website

Setting up a WordPress blog can seem a bit of a daunting task if you are someone without any technical experience or know-how.  I assure you, after you have read through this post you will completely understand how to setup a WordPress blog.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a user friendly website creation tool and writing platform that gives people the tools and resources to write, express and share content on the internet.

WordPress was created in 2003 with the purpose of enhancing the capability of writing online. It started out very small and was only a couple lines of code, and the consumer base was less than 20 people. Since it's inception in 2003 it has grown exponentially, and now is the largest self-hosted blogging platform in the world, it is being used on millions of websites and is seen by tens of millions of people a day.

The first thing that you want to consider before setting up a WordPress blog is that you can set up a WordPress blog for free, your you can put a little bit of money into it. You may be thinking 'Well obviously I am going to setup a WordPress blog for free…"

You may also be thinking "What are the pros and cons of setting up a WordPress blog for free?"

The truth is that setting up a WordPress blog for free is the right choice for some people and the wrong choice for others.  It all depends on what you're plans are for your blog.  If you want a unique domain name and unlimited potential for customization, you'll have to fork out some cash.

If you are going for the free option, WordPress.com will host your website for free. Otherwise you will have to pay to create a domain and find a web host  to host your website. The domain will cost you between $10-$20 yearly and the hosting will cost you a monthly fee depending upon the web hosting package you choose. They vary in price depending on fast or robust you want your server to be. If you had a high traffic website you would want it to be able to withstand the activity without having decreased loading times.

So why would you choose anything other than free? Well, as I am going to explain below, there are advantages and disadvantages for both the free and paid method.

How to Setup a FREE WordPress Blog – Pros and Cons

PROS

  • Free

  • No domain or hosting expenses

  • No Maintenance

The WordPress.com staff take care of all the server updates, optimization, backups and so on.

  • Extra Traffic

You will be part of the WordPress.com network and your blog posts may at some point be featured in their "blog of the day" and therefore you will get more traffic to your blog.

CONS

  • Limited Theme Support

You are only to select and use a theme that is in the WordPress.com database. You cannot alter any code and so you are severely limited in your customization.

  • No Plugins allowed

Again this limits you in your ability to customize and make your website unique.  A plugin is similar to an app on your phone, it is software that performs a certain function and increases the efficiency and customization of your user experience.

  • Limited Monetization

You are unable to monetize and earn income on your blog by allowing ads to be posted on your site unless you meet certain traffic requirements. The requirements are 25,000 page views a month. This allows you then to apply for the ability to use a WordPress feature called Ad Control.

How to Setup a Paid WordPress Blog – Pros and Cons

 PROS

  • Full Theme Support

You can download and use any custom or commercial theme out there and can customize your site in any way. The sky is the limit.

  • All Plugins Allowed

Again you can download and utilize and free or paid plugins that will allow you to customize your site and make your website and blog creation more efficient.

  • Monetization Freedom

You can sell as ads as you desire on your site and keep $100 of the earnings. You can use any ad service that you want.

CONS

  • Regular Expenses

You have to pay a yearly domain fee and a monthly hosting fee. If your website develops into a very high traffic website you will pay significantly more in hosting fees for faster and more robust server response.

  • Maintenance

Responsible for keeping your site updated, keeping backups, and keeping your site optimized.

  • Not Part of The WordPress Network

You won't be part of the network and so will not have access to the same traffic potential right off the start.

Summary

I would like to say that I would recommend ultimately going for the paid option if you are thinking long term.  You may want to start out and get your hands dirty with a free WordPress set up to see if it's something for you.  But if you do decide that creating a website and blogging regularly is something that you are interested in, I would suggest taking the long term approach and putting up some cash.  Not only do you get to uniquely customize your website, you will take it more seriously if you put some money down.

That's just my 2 cents.
